Book Recommendation: The Last Wish (The Witcher) by Andrzrej Sapkowski
Thursday Apr 07, 2022
Thursday Apr 07, 2022
Saddle up Roach and let's get ready to fight some monsters, in The Last Wish by Andrzej Sapkowski! If high fantasy and European fables are your thing, then The Witcher series will be too.
For tonight's cocktail, we're drinking a version of Geralt's white honey potion for removal of toxins and poisons -- which, if you've been reading, will know that for us, is absinthe. Essentially, it's a hot toddy so you'll need the following:
3 oz your favorite bourbon (we're using Black Button Straight Four Grain )
6 oz tea
1 tbs honey
1 cinnamon stick
To make, steep the tea. Separately, simmer the honey, lemon and bourbon on the stove top for at least 20 minutes. Combine and feel immediately better thanks to the warm glow of bourbon. Cheers, Nerds!

It's impossible to not talk about all of the other huge Star Wars universes that exist.

Book Recommendation: Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir
Thursday Mar 03, 2022
Thursday Mar 03, 2022
Hello nerds! Welcome to March's book club recommendation, Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir. Listen in as we talk about space cavaliers, bone necromancy, and the deathless emperor.
But first: we try yet another absinthe cocktail. And yet again we warn you we didn't like it. Like at all. But for reference, and if you too like pain, here's the recipe:
3/4 oz absinthe
3/4 oz elderflower liquor
3/4 oz Lillet blanc
1 dash London dry gin
3/4 oz lemon juice
garnish with a lemon twist
(courtesy of liquor.com)
While this is supposed to be a corpse revivier -- used to help hangovers that coffee just can't cure -- I'd leave all of those ingredients in your bar and settle for an Irish Coffee instead. But that's just me.
As always, if you're enjoying our peerless nerd banter and book club picks, please rate us on Apple Podcasts.
Also, we'd love it if you shared our cast with a friend. It'd really help us grow!

Nerds Movie Review: The Matrix Resurrections
Thursday Feb 10, 2022
Thursday Feb 10, 2022
Hey there fellow sophisticated nerds! Shaun, Mike and Adam get together to talk about the Matrix Resurrections, aka Matrix 4. We'll talk about all things Neo, Trinity and Agent Smith and share our hot takes on the newest entrant into the Matrix franchise.
We're also enjoying a pint from East Aurora's own brewery, 42 North. If you can find them in your local shop, definitely grab a pack of their Illumination pilsner. It may say the word bohemian on it, but it definitely doesn't taste like patchouli or wall tapestries. You'll just have to trust us there.
As always, find us on the socials @nerdsofoldrepublic to find out the latest happenings and be sure to read our other work on our blog .

Book Club Read: Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman
Thursday Jan 27, 2022
Thursday Jan 27, 2022
Let's chat all things dreams, nightmares and the shaper of them; by that I mean The Sandman. This epic series by Neil Gaiman is one of the most awarded graphic novels of all time. Grab a champagne flute and follow the **very** complicated recipe below to join us:
Death in the Afternoon
2 parts champagne
1 part Absinth
If you're like us, you'll want to sip this one slowly, and stop at one. The licorice flavor of the absinth was so overpowering that we couldn't get over it. But I mean, Hemingway like it, so it can't all be bad, right? I mean, everything ended up OK for him.
Listen in to the cast to find out what we thought of the series, and be sure to find us on the socials

The make things a little moodier -- as if Lovecraft needed more brooding doom -- mix up our cocktail, directions at the bottom.
This is part one of our two part Lovecraft series, as our next episode drops NEXT WEEK! If you didn't get your Lovecraft in time, you can read and revisit today's episode, then read: "At the Mountains of Madness" and "The Horror at Dunwhich" for next week.
Drink of the Month: The Unnamed Horror
One part Kraken rum (of course)
Three parts ginger beer
One large ice cube, larger than Everest by far, with some arches and perfect cubes whose dimensionality should not exist.
Stir to chill, and enjoy.

Friday Sep 24, 2021
Grab your shaker and copy of Frank Herbert's Dune for our first read of the fall! We've got a special episode here where we mix up and compare not one, but two cocktails!
The recipe below comes from our friends over at liquor.com:
Ingredients1 lime wedge2 jalapeno coins, seeds removed2 ounces blanco tequila1/2 ounce orange liqueur1 ounce lime juice, freshly squeezed1/2 ounce agave syrupGarnish: salt rimGarnish: jalapeno coin
StepsRub the rim of a rocks glass with a lime wedge, dip the rim in salt to coat, and set aside.
Add the jalapeno coins to a shaker and gently muddle.
Add the blanco tequila, orange liqueur, lime juice and agave syrup, plus ice, and shake until well-chilled.
Strain into the prepared glass over fresh ice.
Garnish with a jalapeno coin.
For our second drink of the night, repeat the above recipe, but replace tequila with mezcal -- read more about this smokey tequila relative here -- and let your world be changed. Spoiler: we all loved the mezcal margarita. Very. Much.
